Major defeat but no need for change
After decades of no contests for the top posts in Umno, the
party polls were finally held after the GE14 where Umno-BN lost the elections for the
very first time after 60 years.The leaders left behind after the resignation of
its president must be commended for finally agreeing not to just have the elections
for all the top posts but also for agreeing to have a debate among the 3 major
candidates for president.
However the same old people who the people rejected in the GE
were re-elected back as president and other top posts in Umno. It is indeed a
sad turning point in Umno's history. Despite the major losses in the general election
on 9 May 2018, returning in the same old people back to helm the former ruling
party implies that there is no need for change in Umno as it has done no wrong.The
results reflects that Umno is still in denial. It is still in denial.
Umno of today is not what it is used to before founding. Today
it doesn't defend the ordinary Malays, who continue to remain poor, but it
promotes the rich and powerful among them. Umno today doesn't defend the true
virtuous Islam but abuses the religion to remain in power.
Umno today, by refusing to admit its shortcomings and make positive changes
to overcome them,is only working towards its premature demise as the rural
Malays will not remain 'rural' and ignorant forever. They will continue to rise
and make Umno irrelevant as the GE14 had proven.
If the new president and his new
team refuse to read this clear message of the people including the Malays in
the GE14,I don't t know if anything else ever will.
